Becoming Savvy
Dec 31st, 2009 | By Darlene MacAuley | Category: Starting Your Biz
Savvy: [sav-ee] adj.
Experienced and well-informed.
As is often the case with professionals in other areas of the healing arts, many of us become doulas because of our love for birth and our strong desire to support other women during this transformative process. We are advocates as well as activists. We are passionate and want to change the face of birth in our society by empowering women to demand better care for healthier outcomes of moms and babies.
It can be overwhelming to realize that becoming a doula also means birthing a business. During a training workshop, certifying organizations provide students with an excellent foundation to support women during birth. The tools to sufficiently begin their practices, though, are often scant, so the start-up process is sometimes slow, especially if a new doula has never owned a business before.
The purpose of this blog is to support birth doulas and other other childbirth professionals in building their unique practices. As a birth doula, business coach, and experienced business owner, I’ll be able to provide a varied mix of resources to help birth professionals not only build the practical and legal foundation that’s necessary for all businesses, but I will bring to light the Inner Work – or personal transformation – that can help us to be nourished in all areas of life.
What do you want to know about growing your doula practice? I welcome your comments and questions and will do my best to support you as you create your very own unique Savvy Doula Business.
With great appreciation for the important work that you do,
Darlene
